Lately there has been enormous demand for qualified and trained public health specialists in India and other developing countries in Asia and Africa. However, there are only a few institutes in these countries, which offer high quality specialized training in public health suited for the needs of countries like India. It was in this context that a group of Indian public health visionaries came together to develop a state-of-the art public health institute a few years ago, and thus was born the Global Institute of Public Health (GIPH). Many Indian public health experts working across the globe own up this venture and contribute ideas to it.

GIPH is envisioned as a new-age Public health teaching and research institute with a global vision. Considering many factors especially the unique position that Kerala state enjoys in the global public health map, the consensus was to base the institute in Kerala.
