Academic Background
Dr. Chitra holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Kerala and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram.
She completed her Ph.D. in Environmental Health Policy from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai, strengthening her expertise in environmental health systems and policy research.
Professional Experience
Dr. Chitra has worked with the ICMR School of Public Health at the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai, where she contributed to research and training in epidemiology and public health.
She currently serves as a Professor at the Global Institute of Public Health (GIPH), where she teaches Epidemiology, Quantitative Research Methods, and Health and Environment courses, mentoring students in both academic and applied public health domains.
Research and Contributions
Dr. Chitra has been actively involved in several national and international research initiatives. She served as Co-Principal Investigator (Kerala) for the ICMR-funded project “Community Voices for Vaccines in India (COVVINDIA),” focusing on vaccine confidence and public health communication.
She also contributes as a part-time consultant to the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) project under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF), Government of India, in collaboration with IIT Madras.
Leadership and Initiatives
At GIPH, Dr. Chitra leads the Centre for Climate and Environmental Health, which focuses on research dissemination, youth engagement, and capacity building in climate and environmental health. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to addressing environmental challenges and their impact on human health.
She is also part of international capacity-building initiatives, including programs organized by the European Environmental Bureau (Brussels, Belgium), collaborating with global experts to develop strategies aimed at reducing the production, export, and use of highly hazardous pesticides in developing countries.
